When it comes time to dispose of outdated or redundant IT assets like computers, servers, and data-bearing devices, organizations must carefully select an IT asset disposition (ITAD) vendor. The right ITAD partner can help maximize device value recovery, ensure proper data sanitization, and enable sustainable electronics recycling.

Data Security is Paramount

“Data security should be the top criteria when vetting ITAD vendors,” says Pam Cobb, vice president of business development at ERI, one of the largest ITAD and cybersecurity-focused electronics recyclers in the United States. “You need to work with a provider that has robust chain-of-custody protocols and data destruction practices that render data 100% unrecoverable.”

Cobb recommends looking for ITAD vendors certified to stringent data security standards like NIST 800-88 and having their processes audited by outside firms. Top providers use software-based data wiping, degaussing for hard drives, and physical shredding to render data permanently unrecoverable.

Environmental Responsibility

Environmental responsibility is another key consideration. “Leading ITAD vendors have comprehensive recycling processes to divert e-waste from landfills,” says Kelley Knutson, president of the non-profit HVAC&R Industry Recovery (HRIR) organization. “They maximize materials recovery and have minimal landfill disposal rates.”

Knutson advises choosing ITAD partners that are e-Stewards certified for responsible electronics recycling. The e-Stewards standard prohibits electronic waste exports to developing countries and environmentally unsound practices like prison labor or landfill disposal of hazardous e-waste.

Vendor Qualifications
Vendor financial stability, liability insurance coverage, customer references, and experience are also important factors. “Look for ITAD vendors with scale, robust compliance programs, good industry standing, and solid downstream vendor audits,” advises John Falchi, president of security and risk consulting firm The Venture Group.

By prioritizing data security, environmental practices, and vendor qualifications, organizations can minimize risks and liabilities while maximizing value recovery when disposing of end-of-life IT assets through ITAD programs.
